ASCE Student Chapter of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Dubai organized a talk On 19th March 2017, as part of the professional interaction initiative which was graced by Dr. Jairo Uribe Escamilla.

 

Dr. Jairo received his Masters and PhD from the reputed Cornell University. He was elected as the Governor of Region 10 and also served as the President of the Columbian Chapter of ASCE and member of the Global Strategic Council of ASCE. He was part of the team which developed the Colombian Code for Seismic Resistant Structures in 1984, 1998 and 2010, also delivered innumerable lectures and conducted seminars and conventions in almost 26 cities.

 

Dr. Jairo spoke on the topic “Sustainability and Infrastructure in Colombia”. He spoke about Colombia’s journey as a country and about its vast biodiversity. Being a post war zone, he emphasized on the challenges of sustainable development and the role of young Civil engineers. Dr. Jairo drew attention to the risks they face in promoting infrastructure due to the diverse topography, impending natural disasters, corruption, conflicts etc. and even revealed their plans for the next decade. He reminded the students about their ethical duties towards nature and the society.

He  introduced the ASCE Vision for 2025 which aims to create a sustainable world and enhance the global quality of life through the collaboration, competency and effective leadership of Civil Engineers who follow ethical methodologies and shared the projects and works conducted by the Student Chapter at the Colombian School of Engineering which he cofounded in 1972.  Students were also allowed to ask questions to Dr. Jairo during the interactive session.
