The expedition will begin from Manali on the 8th of July in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and finish in Leh, the capital city of Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir. Along with eleven fellow riders from different parts of the world, Dr Percy Fernandez will ride for ten days continuously and cycle across seven mountain passes above 4000 M out of which four are above 5000 M including Khardung La, which happens to be the highest motorable road in the world. Khardung La is at an altitude of 5560 M where there is only 50% oxygen in the atmosphere. The expedition will cover a total of 570 kilometres.

The expedition was flagged off at the Manipal campus in Dubai by Ravi Panchanathan, CEO and MD of MAHE Dubai, Niranjan Jayakumar, Vice President and head of business unit and Dr Kota Reddy, the Academic President.

Dr Percy Fernandez is an avid mountaineer, a marathon runner and cyclist. He was the expedition photographer on the 2013 National Cadet Corps (NCC) Everest expedition. He feels it is important to keep pushing one’s own boundaries and raising the bar. He added, cycling on the mountains is incredibly tough and beautiful and most importantly, a humbling experience. He plans to share his experiences after the trip with the students at Manipal and elsewhere.

Dr Percy has been practicing in Dubai for the past two months adding significant saddle time.  For the climbs, he and fellow rider, Abhishek, cycled up twice to Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah and once up the Jebel Hafeet in Al Ain.  For long and flat rides, they chose to cycle in Al Qudra.

Riders will experience different landscapes during the expedition as they cross the green and beautiful Himachal Pradesh to the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh is a rain-shadow region, which means it doesn’t receive any rainfall. But in the past ten years because of global warming, Leh has been receiving unusual mild rains like Dubai.

Dr Percy plans to unfurl the MAHE DUBAI RIDE HIGH Flag at Khardung La, at the highest motorable mountain pass in the world.
