MISD 2019 - BRIDGING THE GAP...CONNECTING THE DOTS

The 5th edition of the Manipal International Symposium on Design (MISD) 2019, titled, BRIDGING THE GAP...CONNECTING THE DOTS, was designed this year in tandem with the vision of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Our national image is founded on the core belief system of tolerance and coexistence and the UAE, as a hallmark nation, has always unanimously promoted values of progression, environmentalism, leadership, knowledge and most importantly social growth. Heightening learning experiences, soaking in cultures and creating a forum for like-minded people, MISD 2019 emphasised at instilling and up-keeping the values of the founder of the proud nation we all call home.

The first keynote address by Prof Felix Beck, Assistant Professor of Design, NYU, AbuDhabi was centred around the topic ‘Media in Space.’ The speech was was all about the impact and future of design and it’s fusion with Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality, all in relation with a deeper understanding of physical and spatial relationships.

 

The second keynote address by Geronimo Jr Domingo, Chief Architect and Retail Delivery Manager at ProArc Engineering Consultants & Vice-President of UAP, UAE (United Architects of the Philippines in UAE), re-ascertained the fact that designing is an experience-based profession and that designers are truly the greatest observers.

 

Islamic architectural design principles are continually reconciled with rapid scientific and technological advancement and the modernization of Islamic societies. In line with this thought-building, presentations by faculty, students (both Bachelors and Masters level) and alumni from the School of Design and Architecture, were a lucidly compiled series, delivered in short and crisp pecha -kucha formats.

 

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in Dubai and the UAE has always been present from the earliest Islamic times, with people and organizations practising Islamic values, donating through philanthropy. A major highlight of the day was a new CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative - a scholarship of AED 10, 500, awarded to a deserving student from the School of Design & Architecture. The Vice Managing Dierctor, MAS Paints, Abdullah Al Atrash made the announcement and handed over his generous contribution to Dr Kota Reddy, Academic President, MAHE, Dubai.

 

Friedrich Schmeisser, Business Development Director Middle East & Championship Director Oman bei European Tour, graced the event too and distributed certificates of appreciation to the students of second year, Bachelor’s of Architecture. 27 students had participated in a project partnered with VOSS ‘Artesian Still Water’ to create a display of a 5-metre scaled-replica of the iconic Burj Khalifa, out of 2500 recycled plastic VOSS water bottles assembled and displayed at the Jumeirah Golf Estate, in a bid to support Voss’s policy of recycling and sustainable living.  

 

The day ended with a series of academic awards conferred upon students from the School of Design & Architecture, for scholastic achievements.
