Dr. S. Sudhindra, Pro Vice Chancellor, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Dubai, has shared his perspectives with leading Arabic news platform 24.ae on what students and parents should consider when making one of the most important academic and career decisions - choosing the right university and field of study.
Published as part of an article exploring how students can choose their university major in a rapidly changing job market, Dr. Sudhindra’s insights establish an important starting point: before selecting a major, students should consider whether their university can provide the environment, exposure and skills needed to succeed beyond graduation. Dr. Sudhindra highlighted three key considerations for students and parents - meaningful exposure to the world of work, the development of future-relevant skills, and opportunities for students to discover where they can create value.
He emphasised that while a strong academic foundation remains essential, students also need opportunities to apply their learning outside the classroom. Industry partnerships, internships and exposure to real-world challenges can help students understand how academic knowledge translates into professional practice.
Dr. Sudhindra also noted that universities cannot predict exactly how the workplace will evolve by the time today’s students graduate. However, they can prepare students with capabilities that remain valuable across changing industries - including critical thinking, questioning, problem-solving, analysis and decision-making.
Another important part of the university experience, he explained, is enabling students to discover their strengths and interests. Exposure to research, entrepreneurship, industry-linked projects and practical experiences can help students connect their academic interests with clearer career pathways. While university reputation, accreditation and graduate outcomes continue to be important considerations, Dr. Sudhindra stressed that students and parents should look equally closely at the actual learning experience offered throughout the degree.
His perspective reinforces MAHE Dubai’s approach to higher education - combining academic learning with opportunities that help students develop the confidence, judgement and practical experience required to navigate an evolving professional landscape.
