Why out thinking AI is the next big skill for students
At Gulf News Edufair 2025, Dr. S. Sudhindra, Pro Vice Chancellor - MAHE Dubai, called for universities to move beyond “preaching” about AI and instead equip students with practical toolkits that build reflection, judgment, and critical thinking in daily classroom practice.

Speaking on the panel Mind over machines: Teaching students to outthink AI, Dr. Sudhindra stressed that higher education must help learners question both human- and machine-generated information.
“What is required is a toolkit - tools that make reflection and questioning a natural part of learning,” he noted, pointing to simple, structured practices like journaling, peer reviews, and guided discussions to reduce over-reliance on AI outputs.
He also highlighted the importance of recognising bias and hallucination in AI systems and training students to approach AI outputs as hypotheses to be interrogated, not answers to be accepted.
As MAHE Dubai advances this agenda, our priority is clear - graduate thinkers who can question, validate, and create with AI as a partner, not a crutch. By hardwiring reflective practice into teaching and assessment, we aim to produce graduates who are credible, ethical, and industry-ready.
